BPA is a chemical produced in large quantities for polycarbonate plastics, which are used to make products including baby bottles.

The concern is that BPA leaches from products containing it, into people, which could eventually lead to various diseases including an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, stunted growth, infertility along with certain cancers and potential interferences with cancer treatments.

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) concluded that there is “some concern for effects on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and children at current human exposures to Bisphenol A.”

The toxic leakage of BPA from baby bottles can be particularly bad when the bottles are worn-out, badly scratched or heated at high temperatures such as during steam sterilisation.
